a) alsa is not very hard to set up, and has very helpful mailing
lists.
b) alsa is going to be standard in the next kernel release anyway.
c) not a single professional audio card runs with the oss drivers in
the kernel.
d) when i last checked, the oss drivers for the sblive still had no
synth support...

so if you want a long and bright future for your programming effort,
it is very much advisable to jump on the alsa train. :)

the downside of alsa is lack of documentation, but it seems this is
being tackled. look at sources or ask questions on alsa-dev.
