(disclaimer: I do hardware first, music second)

Well then who are you going to pay to do it for you? You have a choice
from roland to peavey to mackie. Can't think of any others that compare
right now.

Apart from that I hear you that it would be nice to spend more time
making music as art than writing code as art or building machine as art.
Hold on. I used to think like that. Now I've become happy to focus the
majority of my attention on contributing to the open source movement.

In fact I have found more gratification in using my knowledge to build a
finely tuned machine for my friend (who is near computer illiterate)
which he will start using to produce music with in April than any of the
music I have attempted to compose so far. (I realise you haven't
attempted to compose but are fully fledged)

So what I'm trying to say is that I have put aside my devotion to
composing for the time being in order to focus on understanding and
improving Linux as a multimedia instrument.

There are a lot of people here making a concerted effort on that front.

(At the risk of telling you something you already know.)

Imagine we are on a picnic at a river. It has taken a bit of a walk to
get here.

On the other side of the river a few of us have already cracked open the
brews and lit the BBQ - these people are early risers and strong
swimmers and have already been to this picnic before. Most of us are
strong swimmers but are feeling the chill of walking through the cold
forest to get here so we haven't jumped in yet. Some of us are swimming
but we are a bit worried about the flow of the stream.

You may ask why we have all gathered in this spot to have a picnic in
the first place. Well it's kind of a secret but later on when we are
ready there is going to be a really big concert. Can you see just around
that corner there is a massive soundstage being set up? Some of us are
going to provide the entertainment and there is going to be a really big
uncertain crowd.

The fact is that a lot of the people on this list don't really care
about the entertainers. They just want to build the stage or smoke some
herb and swim in the water. Are we going to get on their case about it?
No one can stop that but why bother.

Why not give us a detailed breakdown of how you think your idea can be
achieved?
