PC-104 is a cute format, although it's actually the 16 bit ISA bus in
a more compact format. No problem for audio, though, as long as you
can find audio cards that are good enough.

I've only seen one PC-104 sound card so far, and that was based on
some Crystal chipset; the same as used on the old TurtleBeach
TBS-2000 card, IIRC. The chip is capable of 48 kHz with full duplex
and at least 90 dB SNR (that's what you get with the TBS-2000, at
least), so it's not entirely useless, even though it's clearly meant
for the consumer market. There are probably other solutions as well,
like integrated sound on the CPU board, but that's likely to produce
worse sound quality.

There is a newer standard similar to PC-104, but based on PCI - can't
remember it's name, though. Anyway, it might be easier to find
serious sound cards for that - and if not, you can always modify a
standard PCI card, or simply connect it via a converter. (Also
possible with ISA/PC-104.)

Theoretically possible, but not very likely... A lot more likely than
Windoze getting serious RT performance, though, at least seen from a
technical perspective. Besides, I doubt that MacOS-X on lower end
embedded systems will be viable in the next few years. (Or is it
perhaps possible to separate the kernel from the rest, and get a
working "system" with a reasonable footprint...? Don't know enough
about how MacOS-X is actually designed.)
