hello Thomas,

i am working on something that does the midi part of what you seem to be
looking for. it has a python wrapper, so you do not have to use perl or
any other egyptian dialect ;)

midithing (http://www.quitte.de/midithing.html) is quite usable already
if you want to generate and play midi data programmatically. the python
interface works well, but is not yet in its final state.

audio is not in, and probably will never be. midithing may eventually
cooperate with Paul Davis' ardour, or possibly with any hd-recorder that
is midi-capable.

in fact i'd like to welcome everyone on this list to give it a try, and
tell me what you think.

tim~
