OK. This sounds very much like trying to get a HIG ... but, perhaps,
there's a subtle difference - we aren't trying to define the actual
keystrokes - just where to keep the record.

So we could compose a mail something like:
""

We, in LAD find it difficult to maintain common look-and-feel across
co-operating applications - because there is no common place in which User's
preferences are stored.

We could suggest, perhaps, that a cross-desktop standard place to store
common preferences be created (for example ~/.preferences).

As a minimum this place should store the User's preference for the list of
actions you've named above (plus others, I'm sure people will think of).

access to the preferences could be by a cross-desktop library (saves yal ;-)

this would export appropriate routines for *all* applications to use (if
they choose to be compliant). [there is nothing that actually forces apps
to be HIG-compliant on other OSs except wanting to be easy-to-use]

""

we then post that on kde-devel, gnome-devel etc. etc. and wait for the
explosion ;-))) ... or someone to tell us they've already done it.

I do agree
- although I still suspect P(success) approx, = 0.5 * sqrt(etc etc)...

the earlier point that a lot of "intuitiveness" is in only having to learn
common things once.

failing this (probably tall order) ... at least we could try something like it for LAD.

Yeah, I know, "show us the code" well, I'll have to pass on that for now ... driver maintenance is already backed-up to the middle of beyond :-(

ciao, Iain.
