A better solution might be to get a card that is designed for multichannel
operation, such as an RME Hammerfall or Digi96/8 with an expansion board.
Or there is the M-Audio Delta 1010 (I think it was) that also has an
ALSA driver.

The RME cards are designed to work with multiple cards in the system,
and you can sync them together with a word clock, to get a very large
number of channels.
