And the Delta 66 and 44 -- I'm considering the Delta series but I don't
think I can really stretch to the 1010, and so maybe getting a 44 and
getting a 66 later would be an option -- but then you'd hit sync problems.

I looked longingly at the RME series for a while but I'd need an external
ADC too and by the time you're looking at that the price has gone up a
fair bit.
Either way, the point is that with some sort of software sync workaround
you could knock together a simple 8 channel thing for $60 or so using
PCI64s. Although that's nothing like as good as a 1010, it is 10% of the
price.
