I've go a small digital studio and I have used Samplitude 2496
(the very best sound editor aviable under Windows!) SoundForge
and Cubase (a pretty bad sound editor, but I don't know the latest
release). Also have seen ProTools and others in operation...

Samplitude has a few choices about the way it displays zoomed
out sample data. I think you can get a free download
test version at

http://www.sekd.de/

It's for windows only :(
