There is one really obvious reason why this state of
affairs exists... ALSA is not yet officially part of
the kernel... until so it will probably always suffer
from less than adequate user and developer support.

That is my personal beef with OSS... as long as OSS
soaks up the prime position in the kernel ALSA will
always be struggling to get critical mass acceptance.

There are two (not 3) answers to this problem, either
leave OSS in the kernel and _FORGET_ ALSA or... <sigh>

I'd go as far to say the future of linux as a viable
desktop system almost depends on ALSA going into the
kernel.
