Some hw manufacturers could call ice1712 "open source", as the specs are
open, it's reasonably priced (cheap) and performs very well.

It created a whole new range of reasonably priced multichannel soundcards!

You could use your analogy to ice1712 and ask "who would use ice1712" as
anyone can take it can create cheap soundcard? I think many manufacturers
are doing better than ever thanks to that chip!

I could easily create a soundcard using ice1712. I even considered to do so.
