Don't you mean Fairlight's failure to patent sample playback synthesis?
Fairlight mark 1 went under in about 1987. They were working at that time
on the very first Fairlight disk recorder, MFX1, but the majority of sales
were coming from the CMI and CVI (Computer Video Instrument). Part of
their demise was due to companies like Akai and Roland releasing samplers
with 90% of the features and 10% of the price of the CMI.
