hello everyone !

we have had a little problem lately:
someone has spammed the LAD list (just once, so far).
unfortunately, this has been reported to spamcop, which resulted in
a number of annoying reports to douglas repetto (who is root on the
list server) and a blacklisting of the music.columbia.edu host in a
few cases.
some mail providers are a little over-eager in their spam blocking
and chose to reject the list mail completely, which has resulted in
a number of cancelled subscriptions.

while i was away last week, douglas repetto has changed the posting
policy to "subscribers only" as a quick counter-measure. however,
i'm planning to revert this asap, since it was a consensus a while
ago that the list should be open to make things easier for kernel
developers and to allow for easy cross-posting from other
special-interest audio mailing lists.

if you'd rather like the list to remain closed, speak up now.

*******************************************
please do not report the occasional spam to spamcop. it will not be
blamed on the spammer, but on our list server.
*******************************************

as a sidenote: please check your spamblock settings are sane. a
while ago, a new subscriber posted an url in the subject of a
perfectly on topic message, which put music.columbia.edu on a number
of private blacklists.
i consider this a misconfiguration and will delete such addresses
within a few days without notice.
the correct behaviour imnsho is to reject *only* detected spam
mails, not blacklist a domain. at least if you want to read mailing
lists.

best,

jörn
