I'm a biggoted Debian user but I'd say there is no comparison, apt-get is
one of the finest and most rewarding pieces of software I know of. Using
the latest "unstable" distribution is actually quite stable 99% of the time
and dependencies for nearly any situation are also right 99% of the time.
The main problem with it is getting it installed for the first time because
there are so few commercial (or not) CDs. One option is to try the boot
and root boot-floppies here and do a network install...

If you have Mandrake up and running then you could try out Debian by
using this tarball and chroot'ing into it while connected to the net...
