Subject: [linux-audio-user] Midi Software Sampler

I just bought a midi keyboard controller lately. Now, I realize it can
produce no sounds of its own, only send midi messages to the computer
about note pitch, length, etc. I should have done some research
beforehand, but I felt farily confidant that a linux software midi
sampler of sorts would exist for Linux.
The closest thing I can find is Soundtracker (www.soundtracker.org), and
it will only support midi input from old alsa drivers (and I hear that
even when it does response can be slow). I'm not crazy about installing
old alsa drivers, (I've had trouble with them in the past) especially if
I accidentaly frag my OSS install, should I somehow find I need to go back.
Smurf Sound Font Editor looks nice. Too bad you have to have a
Soundblaster Live or AWE to use it (is that what I'll ultimately end up
doing?)
Well, I was just wondering whether anyone had any insight on how I can
play my keyboard and hear sounds off my computer. I know this isn't
necessarily needed for production, but it would be nice.
