Have you tried make xconfig recently? Options are organized in
categories and given reasonably readable names, and almost all of them
have good descriptions you can read by clicking on "help", which often
end with a statement like "If you don't know what this is, you can
safely ignore this option," or "If unsure, say Y." I think the same
information is available from make menuconfig as well.

Well, those aren't bad ideas, but I doubt we'll see them anytime soon
because I think a lot of hackers agree with your next suggestion:

Which is precisely why music-targeted distros (e.g. DeMudi) want to
include low-latency-patched, alsa-ready kernels.
