I don't think you need to re-compile the kernel. I have
Mandrake 8 and it appears that it already has the appletalk
module. Just do a "modprobe appletalk" as root and it should
load. I don't see a mandrake netatalk RPM off hand, but you
could probably get another distro's off of rpmfind.net.
