Yes, sfront works well for this sort of application under Linux
using OSS (and in many cases, the emulated OSS under ALSA as well).
See this example shipped with sfront:

sfront/examples/linux/linain/

For a simple SAOL program for doing real-time audio in --> audio out
processing, and see

sfront/examples/linux/linvoc/

for a SAOL program that implements an envelope follower, using MIDI
In, audio in, and audio out all together ...
