A place to start studying other tunings such as just intonation
is http://www.dnai.com/~jinetwk/ (Just Intonation network)
also see Studio J at

They use MIDI bending to change the temperment. It sounds good!
For guitar tuning software, Dave Phillip's Sound and Midi software for Linux
http://sound.condorow.net/ lists:
Gstring http://www.employees.org/~stannous/gstring.html
Gtune (console only) http://home.iae.nl/users/hbaur/dl/
GUITuner (looks like my korg) http://digilander.iol.it/guituner/screenshots.html
KGuiTune http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Hardware/2684/kguitune_page.html
Gtung (gnome) http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/4189/gtune/index.html
VTUner (hungarian) http://rr.sote.hu/vtuner/
xtune http://console-newsletter.hypermart.net/xtune/xtune.htm
All that said, I use a $10 korg tuner with triple A batteries because it fits
in my guitar case.
I have no reviews of these but the guituner looks the best to me because it's
familiar. I have played with gtune console and it's cumbersome to have
to turn on the system and launch an application just to tune. YMMV.
In any event, I recommend checking Dave Phillip's sound pages for questions
of the sort "Is there any XXX software for linux?" as you will always get
the definitive answer there.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is usually a difference!
