There is Rosegarden, an integrated MIDI sequencer and notation editor.
No development on version 2.1 since Oct 1997, but the developers are
working on a completely new version (the old code is not expandable
enough).

I've just started learning about Common Music Notation, a LISP-based
system for creating very comprehensive notation as Postscript files.

Looks very powerful, and if someone could (the original author said he
might) make a GUI and MIDI i/o engine, then perhaps we wouldn't even
need Sibelius. Alas my programming skills aren't up to it yet, but one
day....

I've not used either of these programs, since my Linux box is still at
the pre-natal clinic (i.e. being built :o)

See Mr. Phillips' excellent book and website for more about Lilypond,
Rosegarden, NoteEdit, CMN, abc, Guido:

On reflection, I'd much rather stick with Free Software, even if I have
to pay for it. Remember that Slashdot article about a $20000 bounty for
writing WinModem code?

http://slashdot.org/developers/01/11/19/0342248.shtml

How about if we at LAU each gave $100 to some of the LADs to 'encourage'
development? Is that allowed? Only needs 200 of us, and beats giving
$600 to Sibelius for binaries ;-)

"Use the Open Source, Luke!"
