i've looked into the sony and the tascam. the new sony (pcm-m1) is nicer
than the older ones, but it's still an $800 piece of crap. save your
money for the tascam ($1500). the sony uses 1/8 inch mini jacks for line,
mic, and headphones, and has a proprietary digital i/o, whereas the tascam
uses 2 xlr jacks for analog line/mic input, rca jacks for unbalanced i/o,
spdif i/o, and trs (1/4 inch) jack for headphones. you'll end up buying
all kinds of special equipment to interface with the sony, whereas the
with the tascam you can use standard pro/semi-pro (and even much consumer)
equipment.
