I would do everything possible to get rid of the hiss on the way IN, meaning on
the record side rather than tying to clean it up AFTER the fact. The hiss may
be something as simple as a bad cable or even a failure to mute extraneous
mixer devices, such as microphones, that are not being utilized when playing or
recording. If the hiss is not in the original, you would do well to solve the
problem on the dump. Trying to clean up a poor recording is a messy
proposition. Imagine trying to make a blurry photograph look sharp...if you
can, you should just retake the picture.
