Greetings:

  I'm at my wit's end trying to get amSynth to run. Other people on this
list have successfully compiled and run it, so I don't believe my
problems have to do with the author's code (who has also been helpful
trying to resolve my issues).

  I now believe (irrationally) that the source of my troubles lies in
the fact that I've over-populated my system with versions of libsdtc++.
Here's what I have in /usr/lib :

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2022860 Jul 11 2001
libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.a
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1185378 May 3 2000
libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 544236 May 3 2000
libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.a
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 456737 May 3 2000
libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 359977 Jun 18 2001
libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Jan 28 10:34
libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2.so.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Jan 17 13:00
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.a.2 -> libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Jan 23 15:01
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 -> libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Jan 23 15:02
libstdc++-libc6.1-2.a.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Jan 23 15:01
libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Jan 28 10:34
libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Jan 17 12:56
libstdc++.so.2.7.2 -> libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1025339 May 3 2000
libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Jan 17 12:56 libstdc++.so.2.8
-> libstdc++.so.2.8.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 375773 May 3 2000
libstdc++.so.2.8.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Jan 23 15:01 libstdc++.so.2.9
-> libstdc++.so.2.9.dummy
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5380 May 3 2000
libstdc++.so.2.9.dummy

  To back up a bit: After upgrading to RH 7.2 I discovered that MusE
would not compile under the notorious RH GCC 2.96, so I downgraded to
GCC 2.95.3. I installed an RPM I found somewhere, so I not only have the
list of libsdtc++'s seen above, I also have these listings in
/usr/include :

        /usr/include/g++-2
        /usr/include/g++-2.old
        /usr/include/g++-3

In the same directory I have a bunch of links to various stl includes,
the stack and string headers, and so forth, all linked from
/usr/include/g++-2. I assume the g++-3 directory got there after I the
original upgrade to RH 7.2.

  So my questions are: Which version(s) of libstdc++ should I keep ?
Which include directory should I keep ?

  In case you're wondering why I have so many versions: I routinely try
to compile and run almost everything that gets listed on the Linux
soundapps pages, and sometimes dependencies can be quite specific, hence
the various versions.

  Any and all assistance will be vastly appreciated !

Best regards,

== Dave Phillips
