OK, I tried it this afternoon. Spent several hours building and installing.
alsa-utils failed to make; the first error was:
        alsactl.c:72: undefined reference to `snd_ctl_elem_id_get_index
Decided to do without. Loaded snd-maestro3; it won't play a wav file.
(Got a sox format error; sorry, didn't write it down and it's no long running.)
Tried to load snd-serial-u16550; got unresolved symbols (at end of message).

I'm a pretty committed Linux user, but I've about had it. I've spent at least
50 hours at this point trying to get this to work, with only partial success.
Tried it this morning on my wife's Windows machine and had it working
perfectly in 15 minutes. Sigh.

Please, if anyone can tell me how to record MIDI through the serial port, I'd
love to hear about it. I'm willing to give ALSA 0.9 another shot, but it
looks like I'll need help. But it's not clear to me that this is an ALSA 0.5
problem in the first place; does anyone out there have it working (MIDI serial
record under ALSA 0.5)? ALSA alternatives (e.g. notemidi)?
