Are you using ALSA or OSS?
If I unload the ALSA drivers and do "modprobe audio" also the module
soundcore is loaded. But I get a "non existent device" message when I try to
use /dev/dsp1

I also get the following messages:

May 13 21:08:37 ibook kernel: usbaudio: device 6 interface 2 altsetting 5
unsupported channels 1 framesize 3
May 13 21:08:37 ibook kernel: usbaudio: device 6 interface 2 altsetting 6
unsupported channels 2 framesize 3
May 13 21:08:37 ibook kernel: usbaudio: device 6 interface 1 altsetting 0
does not have an endpoint
May 13 21:08:37 ibook kernel: usbaudio: device 6 interface 1 altsetting 5
unsupported channels 1 framesize 3
May 13 21:08:37 ibook kernel: usbaudio: device 6 interface 1 altsetting 6
unsupported channels 2 framesize 3

sigh
