In 1983 they shipped 53,000 of the luggables, and some may have
shipped in 1982 -- I remember typing on the first-generation
Compaq's over a friend's house in this timeframe ... I guess
the screen was a bit smaller than the one he had on his TRS-80,
but what I recall most about the screen was the quality of the
phosphers, much crisper than the glass teletypes I was used to.
