I would highly recommend the update to 0.9, which I
have done without trouble on both Mandrake 8.1 and
8.2. Just be sure to follow the alsa installation
instructions for "devfs", skipping the ./snddevices
script after installing the alsa drivers, and adding
the following text to your /etc/devfsd.conf :

# added for ALSA permissions, etc
LOOKUP snd MODLOAD ACTION snd
REGISTER ^sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660
REGISTER ^snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660

As the alsa INSTALL says, this assumes that you have
the group "audio". This has always worked very
smoothly for me.

Kevin
