Macs aren't for stupid people, and they make great Linux (or just
Unix) machines.

If you have a fast internet connection and a fast (>=400 MHz) machine,
I really think you should try out Gentoo(.org) linux. I just tossed
it on a machine here at work, and it comes with the latest greatest
kernel available with all sorts of crazy patches, from grsecurity to
low latency to preemtible kernel, etc. Based on the ac kernel series.
They also offer vanilla kernels.

I can't hype it enough. It's so fun to see it build everything from
scratch, compiling the compiler, the library, the compiler again, your
needed system apps, your kernel, etc. In only 3 commands or so it
does that, you do have to config your kernel yourself, the way you
like it. Also as far as security as concerned, the Gentoo team is
faster than most at packaging updated sources.

As soon as I get it on my home machine I'm going to see what it can
really do audio wise. I've used and installed nearly all of the
distros, with the notable exception of SuSE (only used it), and this
one is by far the most fun.

They have a package for jack, but from what I see, a lot of the other
'must-have' apps aren't in there yet. Ok, I've raved enough about
this distro, considering I haven't played so much as an mp3 on it ;)

BTW, the install isn't for the feint of heart, but it reminded me of
the straightforwardness of my first slackware install.
