   Well, isn't that insanely simple! ;-) It worked. No more error message
from Ardour. (Later, much later I'll check if it actually works doing MIDI.)

   One last question, and I will go read the MIDI Howto this evening, but in
/proc/asound/dev I see 4 MIDI devices, MIDIC0D0, D1, D2 and D3. Where do I
learn about what each of these do? Do I have to read driver code or
something like that?

So the Audigy/Emu card is your first card...

... then you have to use the first midi device, which is
/dev/snd/midiC0D0
