So are you using your sound cards midi sounds and triggering them from a
sequencer? If so, you would be able to get better sounds by using one of
the software synths ( SSM, ams etc ) and triggering it via one of alsa's
virtual midi devices. There is a great howto here :

, but you'll need to install the alsa stuff first, which, while
certainly possible, might look a little daunting to a new user.

Actually, IIRC, you can actually do some very simple midi loopback stuff
with the standard oss drivers. I think i got this working at one point
when i was first dabbling with audio on my gnu/linux box.
