For one thing, a buffer length of 1024 will introduce a considerable latency. Try 512, 256, 128 and 64 and see how low can you go before your machine cannot handle it.
Also, it would help if you could provide more info about your system: kernel version, what audio drivers are you using (OSS - commercial?, alsa?) and what version, and the type of your machine. I found that I had to get low latency patches for my kernel for real-time use (I still could use it in real-time but with unaccaptable latencies). I can now use ecasound as a multi-effect processor on a Celeron 533MHz.
