  First: WHY DON'T YOU USE ALSAMIXER, AMIXER OR ALSAMIXERGUI??? They work fine
with alsa. There are some differences between alsa-oss and the real oss. I
haven't looked at aumix and the like for a long time. So I can't tell what has
changed. but you should try it. "alsamixer" is ncurses base like aumix. "amix"
is commandline-based, good for scripting. alsamixergui is gtk based.
  I think it is possible to build alsa into the kernel, but I don't know how.
Anyway, why would you want to do it?
