Well, the company I work for currently runs all 3D (maya and renderman) and 2D
(shake) on linux, that covers most of the desktop use (>300 boxes) plus the
renderfarm (another couple of hundred dedicated machines).
There are a few people with additonal NT boxes really only for running
photoshop. A few macs here and there, but not many. The main reason for the
heavy linux use is that the majority of the pipeline tools are written in
shellscript, and the whole culture is very unix - and of course it can cope
with being put under a lot more stress than the competition when throwing
around huge amounts of data.

This means that for most people here, linux is the main desktop OS, for email,
web, listening to mp3s etc etc.
