Not sure. For me it's nothing more than turning up PCM, unmuting the
master out and turning it up, and then adjusting sound in pysol
itself. NOTE: makign sound changes in pysol crashes pysol on my
system, but upon restartign pysol I get the changes I want.

I use alsamixer, kmix and kamix. All work for me. I don't use amixer much.
