They are raw, IRRC, 8 bit unsigned or some such.

(find someone to) help me reimplement the user interface with modern
technologies like JACK, alsa seq and OSC :-).

I think if we extended the sample slot editor to allow for all different
types of "events", the same UI concept could be used to make great music...

* Define instruments
* Choose current instrument
* Use RET to set notes.

The tick quantisation will be an issue, but I am sure we could work out something.
