you're missing the point. what is meant when people refer to "works out
of the box" means: THERE IS NO SOFTWARE TO INSTALL.

the vast majority of USB devices work this way, although in all fairness
they often have a little control app that can be useful (but is not
required).

if the device works without a software install (many packages now say
"no drivers required"), then the chances are excellent (i.e. almost
guaranteed) that it will work on linux.
