it took me hours of googling, and i finally found this. i don't know if
it's the only or the best method, or if it'll work for you, but it did
for me.

1) i put this on my .asoundrc:

pcm.ice_spdif
{
        type plug
        ttable.0.8 1
        ttable.1.9 1
        slave.pcm {
                type hw
                card 0
                device 0
               }
}

2)

then try

ecasound -i alsa,ice_spdif -o alsa,plughw:0

to monitor your spdif inputs from the analog outputs, or

ecasound -i alsa,ice_spdif -o test.wav

to record to a file

3)
remember to set the clock input to spdif from envy24control
->Hardware settings->Master clock->S/PDIF In
