Well the cheapest hack I could think of, is to dig out an unused/broken USB keyboard, and just hook up a cheap footswitch from a MIDI keyboard up to the wire for the "pause" key:

Not much hardware hacking expertise required there, just know how to solder and to use a multimeter really.
Hmm, could probably build a whole pedalboard that way. For next to zero cost. Intriguing.
