In my view it's technically the same, only that the beats added by
reverbs are much faster and less regular than drum beats, and they get
triggered by the original music, but that's something, you can do with
drum beats as well, if you have a good beat tracker/segmenter.

Reverbs change the impression, music makes just as adding beats to
Gregorian chants does. That's the whole point of adding a reverb. There
are tastless ways to use reverbs, too.
