I get good rates with 5400rpm disks while they still have low noise.

Yes, and 640KB ought to be enough for everybody.

Stop fooling yourself. The difference in price between 500G and 1.5TB is less
then the difference in size.
Once you have the disk-space, you will find some use for it...
