The only factor that I see as relevant regarding the question of
developing for a new platform or not, is the degree of user satisfaction
on the current dominant platforms. Any other method of evaluating this
issue will produce the standard chicken and egg conditions for the new
platform. As an audio platform, Linux is new. Most applications have
not even reached beta. By definition this means that only programmers
are using them. I am a composer, not a programmer, though I have a BSEE
degree, and I have been monitoring the development of audio on Linux for
over 2 years. I don't use it, I use a Mac. So why do I follow it so
closely? I am intimately aware of the overwhelming level of user
dis-satisfaction among musicians using Mac and Windows. Sure the use of
these platforms for audio recording is at an all time high, but this is
because the only practical alternative is to spend $50/hr+ for
commercial studio time. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do the
math. The aggravation that we put up with when using mac/win is based
entirely on economics. This has been true for so long that it has
become an unspoken truth. When a legitimate alternative arrives there
will be a massive migration. We will be like freed slaves and I plan to
use my combined knowledge in music and technology to assist in the
emancipation. Maybe you like freedom too.
