No no, sorry, I didn't give enough context.
The original post was about compensating for delays
introduced by patching external gear into the signal
chain (thus going through two stages of conversion).
More specifically, the post was about using external
processors with a digital console such as a Mackie
D8B.

The problem to be addressed is this:
In pop music recording, it's common to get drum kit
sounds via a combination of close mics on each drum
plus a pair of stereo overheads and sometimes one or
more distant mics picking up room ambience. This
approach gives the engineer a lot of control and is
the basis of most drum sounds you hear on the radio
(those that aren't completely electronic, that is).
Setting up the microphones so that the phase
relationships are all doing something nice rather than
something horrible takes quite some time.

But if you're using a digital console, as soon as you
insert an external effect - e.g. patch in your
favorite vintage tube compressor on the overheads -
suddenly the phase relationships have changed
dramatically and you're back to square one.

So, the guy who wrote that post wanted to be able to
automatically delay all his drum close mics so they
are always exactly in phase with his overheads or room
mics, and not have to always calculate for each track
how much delay it should get.

I'm not sure I would always want to do that, since
sometimes the slight delay sounds nice. But it would
sure save a *lot* of hassle in a very common pro
studio situation.

Not sure why I'm bothering about this since I have yet
to set up any sort of home studio where this would
matter. But I'm hoping to soon.
