fair enough. out of curiosity, was muse c++, and did it have
namespace problems? most 2.96 breakage was due to application code not
being standards compliant. i've run into similar problems and had to
trudge through adding 'using namespace std;' to all the files which
was a major pain.

wrt reinstalling, the easiest thing is probably to reinstall
rh7.2 and play with debian in parallel. debian is quite nice, but for
me, it took some time to figure out how everything was done and where
everything was. so debian might involve some substantial adjustments
before you get up to speed with it.

                thanks,
