I have had major problems with Debian:
-Installer started installing from the network, even I had told
that I don't have a network card and that I don't want install Debian
from network (checked it twice with the same result); fixed manually
even no good info was found for that
-X got not installed because mouse never started working (it does work
  with gpm server)
-I don't even know what X server package I should install (found no info
on it, Debian don't ask it, my card (Intel) is not even listed in X chip
  list)
-IDE controller (Intel) is not recognized; perhaps because of this
I get disk read errors, disk freezes and even IDE resets --- I have
to verify each tar, untar and cp operation before deleting originals
because of those errors; resets comes when I copy from CD-ROM...

Also, Debian package installer is not good at all. It is messy looking
and makes it hard to see the big picture of the installation. Non-free
(read: open source but with no Debian suitable license) packages are
not on CDs/CD images -- makes life difficult if one does not have
a network connection.

Well, I just want a working system. I don't have time to "get used to
it" -- the system must work from the very beginning. This was a year
and half ago when I had an unique opportunity to download Linux CD
images -- I choosed wrong. I have an another opportunity within a couple
of months: I will get both SuSE and RedHat just in case either of them
fails.

Best regards,

Juhana
