Thanks J?rn,

I thought there would be no connection between these programs, but after my experience with rp8 in Windows, anything is possible! The problem hasn't occurred playing wavs.

I'm using an Epox EP-8KTA2 mb with VT82C686A AC-97 Digital Audio (I had already downloaded the BIOS updates addressing problems with the audio.)

My major problem is with the apps: I really don't know what ALSA is for (even after reading the docs -- I presume, from your comments, it's a replacement for OSS. I don't recall installing OSS, so I gather it's part of my LM8 distro, how would I "ditch" it?.) This is the BIG grey area for me. I have ALSA installed, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. As far as Arts is concerned, is it necessary if all I want to do is play mp3 files and listen to audio CD's? Come to think of it, do I need a synthesizer?

I'd really appreciate your comments here -- you seem to have knowledge in the audio area. As you probably have guessed, I'm a "newbie", and sound is the last area I have to tackle.

Thanks for responding quickly,

Regards, Andre.
