Thank you all for your help. Alsa still doesn't work. I tried several things
to get it up and running. With no installation and configuration
documentation and/or tools, I suppose it is not intended to be used.

This is what I get (I'm using the 0.5 drivers since they are already on my
system)

[root_AT_ola etc]# /etc/init.d/alsa start
ALSA driver (version 0.5.11) is already running.
[root_AT_ola etc]# /etc/init.d/alsa stop
Doing alsactl to store mixer settings... [ OK ]
Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 0.5.11): [ OK ]
[root_AT_ola etc]# /etc/init.d/alsa start
Starting ALSA version 0.5.11: (emu10k1) (0) [ OK ]
[root_AT_ola etc]# alsamixer

alsamixer: failed to open mixer #0/#0: No such device
[root_AT_ola etc]# amixer
The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.
[root_AT_ola etc]#
