The "serious" list with linux support is pretty short. M-audio Delta
series is a great value, I got a used Delta 66 for $240 US. Not all
M-audio cards are supported, though; some use very different hardware
than the Delta series and specs are not available, ergo, no linux
drivers. If you need more channels than a couple Delta 1010s, or if
you want to use different converters, the RME Hammerfall is really the
only option. There are some other cards based on the same chips as the
Delta which should (?) work. Hoontech makes one, Terratec makes
one. And I think that's about it.

First of all, if you haven't found Dave Phillips' website, bookmark
this immediately:
http://sound.condorow.net (or an equivalent mirror)
But the list is huge, and it's hard to pick and choose. So many of the
apps listed are half-finished buggy toys.

Razor blade: Your choice of editors. Snd with Dave Phillips' UI
customizations is a good choice. AFAIK, currently you have to go
through the work of setting it all up yourself, following Dave's
articles at oreillynet.com. See:

 http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2001/10/05/snd_partone.html
 http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2001/10/18/snd_parttwo.html

One tip: Dave's mods require guile 1.5, which I didn't find on
the guile homepage. I got it from ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/guile/

Effects: LADSPA plugins. www.ladspa.org. Works with many, many linux
audio programs!

Tape deck and mixing console: You have a few options.

 - Ardour: a replacement for ProTools, big, complex, only available
from CVS, still in something like pre-beta stage, not much
documentation, missing many features, but still very powerful.

 - Ecasound: the interface is rather unique... it's mostly text-mode
stuff! Pretty stable and you can do a lot with it if you get the
hang of it. I haven't really. But the documentation seems to be
   pretty good.

 - SLab: I haven't looked at it in a couple years, but I disliked it
back then. But I've heard people sing its praises.

 - Broadcast 2000: Was very crash-prone when I last used it two years
ago. Maybe it's better now. Might be useable. The author has pulled
the source from his website, but since it was previously GPL'd you
   can still get it elsewhere.

Please do! It can be a rough ride, but it's getting better. the more
the merrier.

No, that's exactly what this list is for, IMHO.
