I agree, ratings are bad. And they are not necessary. How do you for
example comparably rate PD or rate Csound, which both are softsynths?
I would prefer somthing like a "Pluses and Minuses list" like this:

Csound

Plus:
 * Big userbase
 * polyphony

Minus:
 * Needs text editor
 * non-free License

PD

 * Free software

Minus:
 * no poly~ object yet
