Yes it pages, but the protocol itself will only allow 8 strips per device
meaning that if you want a 16 strip surface it requires 2 midi ports.

Generic midi is not mcp.

For mackie compatable devcies in general:

There are a number of devices that do mcp. The latest is the x-touch (not
the compact or mini... though the compact is better than the BCF2k) There
are also the SSL Nucleus, faderport (Ardour has a mode just for this),
Qcon, Avid S3 (in Mackie mode). There are also some mixers that will act
like mackie controls on their own or with middleware.

For any MIDI control surface, using MCP in Ardour if the surface supports
it, will give the better experience than generic midi will.
