Well as far as easiest.. It is easier to find clear documentation on OSS
than ALSA and OSS has been around longer. ALSA on the other hand is
going to replace OSS (although it does have OSS emulation). I would say
that for a high performance multitrack recorder ALSA would be required
(I don't think OSS even supports > 2 channel cards?? I might be wrong
though).

The ALSA API in the past has been in constant flux. Which has caused a
lot of people to stop trying to keep up with it. I believe it has
stablized now though as version 1.0 is due to release soon.

If you are interested in multitrack recorders, the only one I know of is
Ardour (http://ardour.sourceforge.net) its written in C++. I'll admit
that I have never had the priviledge of seeing this program in action.
Such a project is probably not the best place to start!

So basically it comes down to 2 things. If you want to create an
application with modest audio requirements and you want it to be useable
by anyone with sound in Linux, then OSS is probably the way you want to
go. If you want to write a high performance app, then you probably
should use ALSA. Chances are you may use both and have it selectable at
compile time.
