I would suggest debian potato then. Because it des not suffer from
gcc-2.96.x identity crisis and has been proven to be extremely stable.
Use the simple installation and don't install the xfree package. Do that
seperately. Also you may want to force the gnome packages with apt-get
install gnome* once you have xfree-4.10 installed.

Otherwise it is working well here and I can use all the high end sound
apps without hving to worry about gcc fscking things up.
